Molecular Ecology Research Group

genes to ecosystems

Conceptual diagram showing the research framework linking molecular genetics to ecosystem-level ecology

The Molecular Ecology Research Group (MERGE) is located at the Appalachian Laboratory of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science.

We study how organisms interact with their environment and how they evolve across space and time. We use molecular tools to understand how populations are structured across landscapes, how they respond to environmental change, and how they can be conserved. We focus on fish and aquatic ecosystems, but our methods and insights are broadly applicable to other organisms and systems.

By integrating spatial ecology and genomics, MERGE develops tools to protect biodiversity.
